Le Cool London – Weekly

Question. What could make sitting in a London park on a balmy summer’s evening with a rug, some mates and a warm cider even better? The Goonies of course. On a big screen. As the sun goes down. You guessed it – we have a pair of tickets to give away. Just tell us….

Other weekend treats include a bonafide fiesta Mexican style; some swaggering Mancunian book fun at Rough Trade East; some essential support for the Pussy Riot crew; a waterside jazz festival; Rinse FM’s Tate takeover; a feminist dissection of Hitchcock; a totally cowabunga music festival; and a Psycho style double bill.

It’s truffle shuffle time….

What to do if you’re not a) at the Olympics; b) in the Olympics; c) at home watching the Olympics:

First, the giveaways…

1. The film said by Hitchcock to be the “first true Hitchcock movie” (he should know) has been lovingly restored and set to a brand-new score by Nitin Sawhney. That’s like seeing the NHS celebrated through the medium of children’s literature as directed by Trainspotting director Danny Boyle or something. Crackers! But all true. Write and tell me which old film you’d like to see reinterpreted by which music artist, and you may win a pair of tickets. Quick smart now, the show, with Q&A with Nitin Sawhney and Robin Baker, head curator of the BFI national archive starts at 6.15pm today! You have till 2pm.

2. You have to wait till Wednesday for this one (but please enter the comp now). It’s the launch of Wall’s single Magazine at the Sebright Arms. Josh Jones emphasises not only how much people in the music industry are talking about her, but also how much they’re right to. If you’d like a couple of guestlist spots, tell us…

The label Magazine is launched on.

Alternatively…

3. Feast on Green Goat Food in a Georgian townhouse basement on Dean Street.
4. Travel back to old New Orleans in the early jazz era.
5. Stroll through Hampstead Heath discussing Anita Brookner’s Hotel Du Lac (make sure you’ve read it, to avoid embarrassment).
6. Get high on a Brixton rooftop with DJ Derek.
7. Travel deep, deep into the Coppola’s dark heart with this Apocalypse Now double bill.

Sick of ratching around East London? Is it about time you injected some West London glamour into your life? We have just what you need – free tickets to Jade Jagger’s Jezebel party in Kensal Rise, with some champers thrown in for good measure. For a chance to win tickets, just let us know…..

And if you miss out, never fear. As always London is brimming with exciting weekend pursuits. There’s some North London charity style skankin’; a Clash magazine night of new music; a street food fest from the crew who brought you Long Table; an Islington zombie takeover; a secret location cocktail party; a roof top Campari fuelled exhibition; an Olympic themed booze sesh (how appropriate); and a celebration of all things beer.

Let the games commence….

So, who’s got plans for the Opening Ceremony tonight? What’s your party’s USP? Boris related drinking games? Golden arches headware? Bolt inspired celebrations?

If you can think past the Olympics to other weekend pursuits, we have a few competitions that might get your juices flowing. First up there’s Swede Dreams, a niche film festival dedicated to the art of the low budget Hollywood remake. We have a pair of tickets to give away. Simply tell us…..

GOOD LUCK WEEKENDERS

This week feels special. Barclays went DOWN (kind of) and Frank Ocean changed hip hop and R&B forever (if you haven’t already read this, do). Let’s continue on the route of specialness this weekend. Not world-shattering specialness. Just hanging out with your mates, not checking your emails, drinking too much red wine in the sunshine specialness. Stuck for ideas? Use some of ours…..

Tonight, allow Gruff Rhys to plinky-plonk your mind at the Royal Festival Hall; zum your body down in Deptford; or invest in some affordable art.

On Saturday stick two fingers up to Bloc at Fabric; sharpen your pencil moustache for the Chap Olympiad; watch films in a hot tub (yes, really); get batty shakey at the Big Everything; or hand over your mind at the Southbank.

On Sunday there’s a fantastical walk through Covent Garden; a Marx groupie-fest; and a Brazilian takeover at Battersea Arts Centre.

And if you’re still not feeling special enough, we have some treats for you. Fancy the chance of winning your very own Nintendo DS at the Another Dimension exhibition? Simply tell us….

What would you photograph with your Nintendo DS?

This weekend, make like Frank Ocean and get special.

It’s the weekeeend! So at the moment, inside our heads, it sounds like this.

This week, fully aware of how tough Monday can sometimes feel, we have a competition that’ll give you something to look forward to when you’re nursing your sorrows in front of Call The Midwife on Sunday evening. What better way to buoy your way through the week than with freebie tickets to a screening of the Spike Lee classic, Do The Right Thing, at Clapham Picturehouse next Thursday. There’ll be 80s hip hop classics in the bar and some surprise giveaways. We have a pair of tickets to give away. Just tell us…

Which future comic star had a small role in Do The Right Thing?

Competition closes: 2pm, Friday 29 June

But before we get ahead of ourselves, here are some treats that you can enjoy over the weekend. On Friday there’s a Brazilian/ African soundclash at Billingsgate Market; a Luhrman classic at the House of St Barnabus; a Detroit legend at Netil House; and a Julie Delpy double bill at Riverside Studios.

On Saturday, there’s a not-to-be-missed acoustic show; pop-up pizza action in Shoreditch (of course); South of the river; a poetry-fest down on the Southbank; the long-awaited Paradise Gardens opening; a celebration of all that is good on Charing Cross Road; a screening of a Winona Ryder classic; or a chance to see the original Shutterbug in action.

On Sunday get stuck into some serious film watching Eastside.

Blimey, it’s been a long week hasn’t it?! It started off with so much promise – a win in the football (thankyou Rooney and your Samson-like implants) and some subtle sunshine. Then the rain set in, Jimmy Carr joined our long list of national tw*ts and we all realised that it’s a bloody long time til pay day. Now all we have is the dregs of a slightly vinegary bottle of Jacobs Creek and a particularly gripping Eastenders storyline. Unless, I hear you cry, there are some exciting weekend options to lift us from our festering….

On Friday, make like you’re an Argentina and feast like a stoned Maradona; or head to the V&A for a Casablanca re-thinking; or get stuck into some Georgian Decadence.

On Saturday the Tropicalista boat party should help to wash away those rainy blues; get stuck into a retro-gaming adventure; or make like a Parisian smoky siren on the dancefloor.

On Sunday it’s time to get arty down at the Southbank, or with some Soho badger loving (of course!).

The Jubilee’s over and you’re nearing the end of a grueling THREE DAY WEEK. In theory you have two working days of energy in reserve. So this weekend you’ll be dripping in verve, sweating joie de vivre. Perfect for a culture-filled two days of London loving. Plus, if you’ve been house-bound – petrified of ‘death by Union Jack’ – you can come out now. You have a short hiatus before the Olympics begin.

Today you could head to a talk at the ICA from the master of musical eclecticism; an animation lover’s wet dream on the Southbank; partake in some late-night monkeying around; or some late-night philosophising.

On Saturday you can feel the wind against your cheeks in a starkers bike ride; or there’s a fully-clothed bike ride if you’d prefer. Head to Borough market to build your own brekkie; or get shnuggly with the dinosaurs at the Natural History Museum.

On Sunday keep the party going with the better half of Groove Armada; or find out everything that you didn’t know about Woody Allen at the ICA.

It’s OK guys, the Cath Kidston bunting’s down and Cliff Richard’s gone home, it’s safe to come outside……

It’s a safe bet that this blog post finds you giddy as a kipper. It’s Friday. It’s summertime. And we are staring straight into the gaping mouth of a four-day weekend. Life is sweet. Trust us to come along and offer you the opportunity to make it even sweeter.

We have two tickets to give away to Standon Calling. Yeah, you ‘eard, the three-day music festival with the likes of Fat Freddys Drop, !!! and Death in Vegas headlining. For your chance to win, tell us….

How do you say !!!? (we’ve always wondered)

As if that wasn’t enough, we also have five queue jump passes to give away to the Book Club’s Jubilee Street Party. Trust us, come Sunday these will be more valuable than Berlusconi’s balls. Get in touch and let us know….

Who is the most ridiculous royal?

Over the weekend, don’t forget to document the mayhem. We’re going to put together an album of the frivolities and we’d love to feature your shots. Just follow us on instagram lecool_london and tag your weekend photos #LECOOLJUBILEE.

And if you don’t make it into the Book Club’s celebrations, never fear, there’s plenty more coronation chicken drenched fun to be had. Head to a very gentlemanly affair in Bedford Square Gardens; Bethnal Green for some irreverent mirth; or the Queen of Hoxton’s rooftop shindig.

God Save The Queen (Latifah, we mean)
